With a goal of providing a low-cost, family-friendly outing for families affected by layoffs, The Austin Pink Slip Festival was born, and saw first light in July 2009. Our goal is to let Austin families know that their community is here to support them with fun, family and friends.
Our event in July provided 550 free tickets to the community, all of which were eagerly reserved, so that unemployed people and their families could have a fun afternoon out. With face painting for the kids, 6 live bands, 25-cent hot dogs, 50-cent beers, free soda and popsicles, we gave Austinites a reason to smile and a way to get out and have fun for as little as $1 for a family of 4.
The Pink Slip Festival was an “Austin-style” response to the economic downturn where one person can help another in a fun, casual, family-friendly setting. This event served as a ‘shot in the arm’ for job seekers and their families affected by job losses. After hearing time and again how people are in “crisis mode”, cutting back on and sometimes eliminating altogether their family outings in an effort to stretch their budgets, we wanted to provide not only an opportunity for the family to enjoy a day out together, but also a forum where people looking for work could connect with each other and with non-profits in need of volunteers.
